There are some fun facts about cooking that you can use that will surprise yourself and
friends. Great Grandma had a way of measuring things that were not quite exact. Or so we may have thought. Here are a few of the measurements that were used and their equivalents today (In exactness talk even though they are not exact!!!)
Many of these measurements are still used and they are fun when you know what they mean. For years I wasn’t sure what a bit of something was or even a ‘little’.
Well now we will attempt to define some of these measurements.
| Measurement | Equivalent or Description |
| A pinch | This is what you are able to pick up between your thumb and your first 2 fingers. It is not very likely that your pinch is like your grandmothers. It is less than 1/8 tsp. |
| A Half a pinch | This is the amount that you can pick up between your thumb and forefinger. It is less than a pinch. |
| A scosch | A Half a pinch |
| A smidgin | A half of a half of a pinch |
| A touch | Just about a pinch |
| A Little | The amount that makes it taste like you want it. A little wine in my sauce is about 1/2 cup while for others it is 1/8 cup |
| Some | More than a little but not as much as a lot |
| A Lot | Relative to How much is a little. Mom always put a lot of sugar in the cool aid . It was sweet. |
| A handful | About 1/4 cup if you use a flat handful or about 1/2 cup if you use your thumb as a stop |
| 2 Fingers | What you can get when you use your fingers as a spoon. About 1 tsp. |
| A Shake | Whatever comes out when you shake whatever you are shakin’. This is anything that shakes, especially hot stuff. |
| A Dash | Whatever comes out in liquid when you shake whatever you are shakin’. This works for hot sauces and the like. |
